Hi there everyone on the web. My name is Karl. I love music. This is my first ever blog post.

On this blog I will be listing my favourite 18 song compilations. They will all have a theme of some description. This one is the Best Songs of 2009.

I’m not going to blabber too much about the concept of this blog, but I will quickly outline where you can listen to all of these songs. If you go to the “Home” link above you will see the three social icons for Mixpod where you can listen to the tracks listed on each compilation, Twitter and Facebook. So many people use either, or both, of these so I thought it would be the easiest way for everyone to follow my updates via your existing networks rather than asking you to add yet ‘another’ network into your online lives.

So here we go – my first set of eighteen songs for this blog. I hope you enjoy. If you do, or if you don’t, let me know I’d love to hear what I’ve missed out on.

Best Songs of 2009

1.    Sometimes - Miami Horror
Great new Aussie dance band in the vein of Midnight Juggernauts, Cut Copy, et al. I love this track it’s an absolute corker. The much awaited album is coming soon apparently; the second single ‘Moon Theory’ has me holding great hopes for these guys.

2.    Lisztomania – Phoenix
This is why you can now trust the French! The Band of the year pump out a pop rock cracker. They we easily my fave band of 2009. Warning: They may appear in this list again.

3.    Magic – Ladyhawke
Ahh…. Ladyhawke, the previous single ‘Paris is Burning’ was a brilliant song and ‘Magic’ is a major step forward to this little Melbourne girl with the massive attitude.

4.    Raindrops - Basement Jaxx
One of my favourite tracks of all time is ‘Where’s your head at’, this is not quite in that calibre but the Jaxx seldom let their fans down. Another mesmerizing dance track to while your days away. Vodka Lime and Soda in hand of course.

5.    In For The Kill - La Roux
I liked this song, then went off it, then ended up loving it. I don’t know if a man in his mid-30s should be liking this track but I don’t care! I LOVE IT!! Pure pop genius.

6.    Mykonos - Fleet Foxes
A beautiful harmonic pop song that breaks the mould of doom and gloom in the world today. Was debating whether or not this was a 2009 track but decided in the end it was, in spite of great debate amongst my friends and myself.

7.    Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap
I love these guys and not just because they are from my home town of Melbourne. Dougie Mandagi’s lead vocal are amazing and this song is the best of a bunch, on a collectively very, very good album. Do yourself a favour and listen to the temper trap as often as you can.

8.    Fire - Kasabian
These guys were looking like being nothing more than 'Britpop, Primal Scream, rip-off, wannabes' but they came good here. Rocky, Funky, Dancey. Just cool. Leave your pre-conceived ideas about Kasabian at the door and just enjoy!

9.    There's No Secrets This Year - Silversun Pickups
Another band accused of ripping off another – this time Smashing Pumpkins. This song is too damn good to ignore. Sounds like smashing pumpkins? Yes! Brilliant? Yes!

10.  New Fang - Them Crooked Vultures
The latest ‘super’ band. Is David Grohl the most blessed musician to ever live? A thumping rollicking rock tune to make the day pass away that little bit easier.

11.  Ulysses - Franz Ferdinand
You always know what you are getting from the Ferdinand’s. Their albums may not be top notch IMO, but their ability to churn out great catchy singles is undeniable. And here is yet another one to fill the indie dance floors.

12.  1901 – Phoenix
I’m not going to gush over Phoenix anymore. It’s always unfair to name bands that missed out when you are making a compilation and it’s a bit of a cop-out really. But Calvin Harris you are stiff that these guys emerged in 2009.

13.  Yours - Dan Black
I found out about Dan Black in an internet forum and I’m glad I did. I played this song too death. Angry, poppy, funky, cool, fresh. Hopefully he can bring some more fresh sounds to the table soon.

14.  Resistance - Muse
I remember watching Muse years ago at the Evelyn Hotel on Brunswick Street in Melbourne. My how they have grown. A grandiose soaring pop rock song.

15.  Sticks 'N' Stones - Jamie T
Pure unadulterated lad-pop. It much more fun that it should be and has one of the catchiest choruses in years. YEARS! Thanks god I didn’t have to listen to Lily Allen all the time on the radio this year. There is hope for the UK.

16.  In The End Its Your Friends - Shout Out Out Out Out
I found out about these Canadians on Facebook. I don’t know how, or why, but I don’t care. This track builds and builds and will have you bopping around in the wee hours of the morning. These guys have a great catalog of tunes and if they come to Australia I will be 1st in queue.

17.  Getting Away With It - Sean Quinn & Gus Cullen
A cover of the James track from the early 2000’s. Loved the original and was just happy to hear this song on the radio again in some form. Sean Quinn is one of Melbourne’s best ever DJs hand down. In fact one of the world’s best and it’s no wonder he churned out this dance floor filling corker!

18.  Holiday - Dizzee Rascal
Dizzee – The man! I love the sound of Dizzee Rascals voice. Brilliant raps and fun songs that you can’t help but enjoy whether you at the beach, in the bar, the car anywhere! Turn it up and enjoy!

Enjoy – I hope.

Remember all these mixes will be archived at my Mixpod account if you would like to listen to them. The latest mix can be listened to on the homepage of 'eighteen songs'.
